  57.  
  58. This installation  guide supports the Seagate ST11M MFM and ST11R
  59. RLL Controllers, ROM Version 2.0 or higher.
  60.  
  61. The ST11M and ST11R are 8-bit ST412 interface controllers
  62. designed for use in PC XT AT systems with DOS-based applications.
  63. Use with other than DOS-based systems is beyond the scope of this
  64. guide. Contact your Distributor/Dealer.
  65.  
  66. *  The ST11M is designed for use with drives employing MFM data
  67.    encoding.
  68.  
  69. *  The ST11R is designed for drives using RLL (2,7) data
  70.    encoding. Seagate RLL drives are easily recognized by an "R"
  71.    after the model number, e.g., ST157R. Seagate Technology, Inc.
  72.    assumes no liability for installation of an RLL controller
  73.    with an MFM-certified drive.
  74.  
  75. *  The ST11M/ST11R have a unique recording format and therefore
  76.    require all attached drives to be installed by one of the
  77.    processes described in this guide before operation.
  78.  
  79. This publication may be used with Seagate Paired Program drives
  80. or as a controller-only installation guide.
  81.  
  82. Paired Program drives are shipped with a Seagate controller. They
  83. are recognized by a "PR" label on the drive top cover. Paired
  84. drives are shipped formatted with a small DOS partition
  85. containing the installation program, INSTALLR, which will low-
  86. level format and partition your drive. You must supply the DOS
  87. program. The ST11M/ST11R can recognize whether a drive has the
  88. Paired Program software loaded, or has been previously installed.
  89.  
  90. Paired Program drives with formatted capacities greater than 32
  91. MBytes have Disk Manager partitioning software loaded. This
  92. utility has been customized by Ontrack for Seagate. Refer to
  93. Section 2.1 for special instructions on formatting Paired Program
  94. drives.

  99. Before You Begin...
  100.  
  101. Inspect the controller, drive, cables, mounting
  102. hardware/accessories, documentation and packaging. If any item is
  103. incorrect, missing or appears damaged, contact your Distributor
  104. or Dealer immediately.
  105.  
  106. Handling: Improper handling during transit/shipping accounts for
  107. many "installation" problems. Prior to installation, handle your
  108. drive/controller carefully.
  109.  
  110. Observe Static-Discharge Precautions: Keep the drive/controller
  111. in their static-shielded bags until you are ready to complete the
  112. installation. Use a grounded wrist-strap at your workstation; if
  113. unavailable, ground yourself frequently by touching the metal
  114. chassis of the system before handling any components. Avoid
  115. static-inducing carpeted areas.
  116.  
  117. Shipping: When transporting or shipping a drive or controller, a
  118. Seagate-approved container must be used. Keep your original box.
  119. They are easily identified by a red label identifying them as a
  120. "Seagate Approved Package."
  121.  
  122. Shipping a drive in a non-approved container will void the drive
  123. warranty.
  124.  
  125. Repair centers may refuse receipt of components improperly
  126. packaged or obviously damaged in transit. Contact your
  127. Distributor to purchase additional boxes. Seagate recommends
  128. shipping by an air-ride carrier experienced in handling computer
  129. equipment.
  130.  
  131. Maintenance: Seagate disc drives do not require any preventative
  132. maintenance. The head/disk assembly is sealed and does not
  133. contain any user-serviceable components. Tampering with the
  134. factory-seal will void the warranty.

  140. 1.0  ST11M/ST11R Controller Installation
  141.  
  142. Caution: Do not handle a drive or controller without observing
  143. static-discharge precautions. A grounded wrist-strap is
  144. preferred; if unavailable, ground yourself frequently by touching
  145. the metal chassis of the system before handling any components.
  146. Do not unpack the drive/controller until you are ready to
  147. complete the installation.
  148.  
  149. BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY INSTALLATION, READ THROUGH ALL STEPS AND
  150. VERIFY THAT THE SYSTEM IS POWERED-DOWN.
  151.  
  152. During the formatting process, you will be asked to enter some
  153. simple drive specifications. Please refer to Figures 1-2 for
  154. formatted capacity and basic specifications. For non-Seagate
  155. drives, refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

  210. Data Cylinders: User cylinders are calculated from logical zero,
  211. i.e., 0 to 614 equals 615 cylinders.
  212.  
  213. Write Precompensation (ST225 Only): For optimum performance,
  214. precompensation is recommended starting on cylinder 300. Enter
  215. the information, when prompted.
  216.  
  217. Interleave: Use optimum interleave as indicated in installation
  218. routine.
  219.  
  220. Read/Write Head Parking: A PARK program is preloaded on all
  221. Paired Program drives, PARK.EXE or PARK.COM, which the INSTALLR
  222. software will copy to a diskette during installation. The
  223. following drives require parking before the drive/system is
  224. transported: ST124, ST137R, ST225, ST225R, ST238R, ST250R. All
  225. other Seagate drives feature automatic R/W head parking at power-
  226. down.

  231. 1.1  Set the Controller BIOS Address
  232.  
  233. Controllers and add-in boards are installed in the bus slots on
  234. the computer's motherboard. These slots are recognized by the
  235. computer BIOS address number. Each board installed must be
  236. jumpered for a specific address.
  237.  
  238. C8000H is the default BIOS address for the ST11M/ST11R. If this
  239. address is already occupied by another board, use the jumpers
  240. provided to change the Seagate controller to another address.
  241. Refer to Figure 3.
  242.  
  243. When installing an ST11M/ST11R controller with a Seagate
  244. ST01/ST02 SCSI Host Adapter, the controller must be at the lowest
  245. address (C8000H).
  246.  
  247. When installing the ST11M/ST11R in a system already containing a
  248. hard disc controller, the Seagate controller must be jumpered at
  249. a higher BIOS address than the resident controller. If you are
  250. not sure of the other controller's address, try one of the higher
  251. addresses for the Seagate controller.
  252.  
  253. Controller physical installation will only involve setting the
  254. BIOS address (Figure 3), attaching the cables and inserting the
  255. controller in a system bus slot. It is often easier to attach the
  256. cables before you install the controller.

  299. 1.2  Controller Physical Installation
  300.  
  301. CAUTION:  VERIFY THAT THE POWER IS OFF.
  302.  
  303. 1. Remove the System Cover (Refer to your system manual).
  304.  
  305.    Access to the screws is usually at the back of the system.
  306.    Save the screws. Systems vary, but most require you to slide
  307.    the cover forward for removal.
  308.  
  309. 2. Install the Controller into a System Bus Slot.
  310.  
  311.    Verify that all connections are correct and replace the system
  312.    cover.
  313.  
  314. 3. Optional Drive Power Connector on the ST11M/ST11R.
  315.  
  316.    Normally, drive power is supplied via a power harness from the
  317.    system power supply directly to the drive's J3 DC power
  318.    connector. The J5 connector on the ST11M/ST11R can be used to
  319.    provide disc drive power in system lacking an extra power
  320.    harness or for "Drive-on-a-Card" applications. See connector
  321.    J5, Figure 3.
  322.  
  323.    A cable splitter, often called a Y-cable may be used to tap
  324.    off the diskette drive power cable. They are available from
  325.    most Distributors/Dealers.

  330. 2.0  Preparing to Format Your Drive
  331.  
  332. Please read this section before proceeding to the formatting
  333. instructions. Be sure to back up any drive containing data.
  334. Formatting at any level may result in partial or complete loss of
  335. data. Seagate Technology, Inc. assumes no liability for lost
  336. data.
  337.  
  338. *  Always use the same version of DOS throughout the entire
  339.    process. On two-drive systems: Always use the same version of
  340.    DOS on both drives. When adding a second drive, it is
  341.    sometimes necessary to reformat the first drive.
  342.  
  343. *  DOS assigns a logical identifier (C, D, E...) to each
  344.    partition that it recognizes during the boot load. It assigns
  345.    these letters to the first partition on each physical drive in
  346.    sequential order (e.g., C to Drive 1, D to Drive 2).
  347.    Subsequent letters are assigned to the remaining partitions on
  348.    Drive 1, followed by Drive 2. See table below for typical
  349.    examples:
  350.

  359. *  For optimum performance, format the drive installed in your
  360.    system in the same orientation in which it will be used.

  362. 2.1  Paired Program Drive Formatting
  363.  
  364. Paired Program drives are shipped with a small DOS partition
  365. containing Installation software and a README file which has the
  366. latest information for the drive being installed. See Section
  367. 3.0.

  372. 2.2  Non-Paired Drive Formatting
  373.  
  374. Seagate non-paired drive do not have installation software or
  375. recognizable format. These drives may be installed by following
  376. the procedures in Section 4.0.
  377.  
  378. 2.3  Paired Drives with Less than 32 Formatted MBytes
  379.  
  380. You will need one DOS-bootable diskette that has the boot files
  381. from the version of DOS that you plan to sue on your Seagate
  382. drive. This diskette should also contain the FORMAT program
  383. provided with DOS, and sufficient space (approximately 50 KBytes)
  384. to save the installation programs from eh hard drive. The
  385. diskette must not be write-protected.
  386.  
  387. 2.4  Paired Drive with Greater than 32 Formatted MBytes
  388.  
  389. You will need two diskettes; one DOS-bootable with the version of
  390. DOS you plan to use. The second diskette must have at least 360
  391. KBytes available to save the installation and Disk Manager
  392. programs. The diskettes must not be write-protected.
  393.  
  394. 2.5  CMOS Configuration
  395.  
  396. If you are installing your drive in a PC AT and a hard drive is
  397. not presently attached or operational, the hard drive count in
  398. CMOS will already be set to zero.
  399.  
  400. If a standard hard drive is already attached and operating, it
  401. will be the first drive and the Seagate Paired Program drive will
  402. be Drive 2. It is not necessary to change the CMOS hard drive
  403. count when installing with ST11M/ST11R controllers.
  404.  
  405. 2.6  Read/Write Head Parking
  406.  
  407. A PARK program is preloaded on all Paired Program drives. The
  408. following drives require this program before the drive/system is
  409. transported: ST124, ST137R, ST225, ST225R, ST238R, ST250R. All
  410. other Seagate drives feature automatic head parking at power-
  411. down.

  416. 3.0  Paired Program Installations
  417.  
  418. Read Sections 1-2 before beginning any formatting. The entire
  419. software installation routine is menu-driven and takes from ten
  420. to thirty minutes, depending on drive size. For specific DOS
  421. questions, refer to the DOS manual supplied with your system.
  422. After the format is completed, the read/write heads will be
  423. parked. At the next power-up, the system will boot from the hard
  424. disc.
  425.  
  426. 3.1  Paired Program Formatting
  427.  
  428. Place a DOS-bootable diskette (to boot simply means to start the
  429. system) in Drive A and switch the power on a follow the
  430. instructions displayed on the screen. If you are installing a
  431. second drive, type:
  432.  
  433.           D:INSTALLR D
  434.  
  435. If you are installing a drive with Disk Manager software and you
  436. already have a hard disc in your system, you must copy the
  437. DMDRVR.BIN and CONFIG.SYS files from the Disk Manager diskette to
  438. the existing (first, or boot) drive.
  439.  
  440. If you already have a CONFIG.SYS file on the boot drive, update
  441. the file to include the following line: DEVICE=DMDRVR.BIN
  442.  
  443. Refer to your DOS manual for instructions on editing the
  444. CONFIG.SYS file. Disk Manager also provides help files which you
  445. may print using the standard DOS print commands.

  450. 4.0  Non-Paired Drive Formatting
  451.  
  452. Use this procedure for non-paired drives or when reformatting a
  453. paired drive whose installation software files were lost or not
  454. copied before formatting.
  455.  
  456. Be sure to back up any drive containing data. Formatting at any
  457. level may result in partial or complete loss of data. Seagate
  458. Technology, Inc. assumes no liability for lost data.
  459.  
  460. If you use the DOS DEBUG utility to low-level/primary format the
  461. drive, you must answer "YES" to the question, "Do you want to
  462. enter the defect map which is supplied on your hard disc drive
  463. cover?". Proceed with entering all defects from the defect map.
  464.  
  465. Important Note: If you use the ST11M/ST11R controller, BIOS
  466. Version 2.0, with a Seagate Paired Program drive, but do not use
  467. the Seagate installation software (INSTALLR), you must manually
  468. enter the Manufacturer's Defect Map (attached to the drive top
  469. cover) during the low-level/primary formatting operation.
  470.  
  471. Always use the same version of DOS throughout the entire process.
  472. On two-drive systems: Always use the same version of DOS on both
  473. drives. When adding a second drive, it is sometimes necessary to
  474. reformat the first drive.
  475.  
  476. 4.1  Low-level Physical Format Using BIOS Facility
  477.  
  478. When using DEBUG to format in an AT system, the CMOS or system
  479. setup should be set to 0 (i.e., no hard drive installed).
  480.  
  481. 1. Boot the system from the DOS system diskette.
  482.  
  483. 2. At the A> prompt, insert the DEBUG diskette and type:
  484.

  490. 3. To access the controller's format routine, at the "-" prompt
  491.    type:
  492.  
  493.    G=XXXX:5 <enter> (Where XXXX is the correct address; refer to
  494.    Figure 3.)
  495.  
  496.    Note: Seagate controllers will step you through the process.
  497.    Refer to the drive charts Figures 1-2 for correct drive
  498.    parameters.
  499.  
  500.    On drives over 32 formatted MBytes, Disk Manager will
  501.    automatically partition and high-level format the drive.
  502.  
  503.    Use FDISK and FORMAT on your DOS diskette for drives less than
  504.    32 formatted MBytes.
  505.  
  506. 5.0  Troubleshooting Your Installation
  507.  
  508. If you have a problem getting the initial screen, or later
  509. getting the system to boot:
  510.  
  511. *  Check the cabling between the controller and drive. Pin-1 on
  512.    the controller always corresponds to Pin-1 at the drive
  513.    connector. Most cables have a contrasting color on the cable
  514.    to indicate Pin-1.
  515.  
  516. *  Check the power cable to the drive. Can you heard the drive
  517.    spinning up?
  518.  
  519. *  Verify correct Drive Select jumper.
  520.  
  521. *  Verify correct BIOS address for the controller. If you have
  522.    more than one board that uses BIOS ROM space, each must be
  523.    configured to a different memory address. Addressing multiple
  524.    boards at the same memory location can cause problems of a
  525.    seemingly indeterminate nature.
  526.  
  527. *  Low-level formatting takes too long or never completes
  528.  
  529.    Format again. Make sure correct drive parameters were entered
  530.    and cable connections are correct.
  531.  
  532. *  FDISK or Partitioning Error Messages: "Error reading fixed
  533.    disc," or "No fixed disc present"
  534.

  538.    Check correct drive parameters entered. Turn the system off
  539.    and power-up again. Rerun FDISK.
  540.  
  541. *  High-level Format Error Message:  "Invalid drive specification"
  542.  
  543.    Run FDISK again to make sure the DOS partition is active.
  544.    Check drive parameters and low-level format again.
  545.  
  546.    In AT systems, check that no drive type is entered in the
  547.    system CMOS setup for the drive attached to the ST11M/ST11R.
  548.  
  549. *  Drive fails recal or test drive ready
  550.  
  551.    Check installation, cables, and drive select jumper.
  552.  
  553. *  I/O Errors  when using  Disk Manager:
  554.  
  555.    "Uncorrectable ECC - I/O Error"
  556.  
  557.    "Unrecoverable I/O Error"
  558.  
  559.    If you are formatting a drive in an XT or using the
  560.    ST11M/ST11R controller in an AT, low-level format the drive
  561.    through DEBUG using the controller's BIOS routine.
  562.  
  563. *  After formatting with Disk Manager, your system does not
  564.    recognize the D, E, F... partitions:
  565.  
  566.    First, make sure that you boot from the hard drive. If you
  567.    still cannot access these partitions, check that the Disk
  568.    Manager device driver, DMDRVR.BIN is in the root director of
  569.    the C: (boot) drive. Verify that the CONFIG.SYS file contains
  570.    the following line:
  571.  
  572.              DEVICE=DMDRVR.BIN
  573.  
  574. If you experience problems accessing your DOS partition after
  575. installation, refer to the help files provided with Disk Manager.
  576.  
  577. For system or DOS help, contact your computer system
  578. manufacturer. For additional installation help, contact your
  579. authorized Seagate Distributor/Dealer.
